“Pretty Words, Jane; Would That You Were Too”

ravengoodwoman:

period-dramarama:

“NOBODY knows for sure what Jane Austen looked like, which is causing some of her admirers a degree of anxiety these days. Was she attractive or not? What if, to put it bluntly, she became a writer in part because she didn’t have the looks to land a husband along the lines of a Mr. Darcy or a Mr. Knightley?”

‘What if, to put it bluntly, she became a writer in part because she didn’t have the looks to land a husband along the lines of a Mr. Darcy or a Mr. Knightley?”

wow

What if, to put it bluntly, Charles McGrath became a writer because he smells so strongly of balls that other people can’t stand to be around him and he can only sit isolated in a dark room and submit articles to the times via e-mail?

You know what I can’t stand?  That there aren’t any articles questioning why Shakespeare became a writer, despite his creepy five-head and skeezy hoop earring.  Or that foul old white men, who overlook a woman’s major contributions to the literary canon in order to discuss her looks, are considered worthy of our time.
