I was watching P&P95 today and I had to laugh at all of Darcy’s ‘You must’ statements. His privilege is so great that he feels he can demand anything of people. “You must forgive me.” Or “You must excuse me.” Really now? Must I? I feel like chopping down those lines takes away the reason why Elizabeth is so angry with Mr. Darcy. She’s angry because he is arrogant enough to believe that she would accept his proposal (or rather, demand) after all he has done (or she thinks he has done) to make her family and friends miserable. And he has the gall to insult these people after his behavior! Telling him to say “I love you” while crying turns Lizzy into a complete bitch and bully when from her current point of view, her feelings are totally justified! Okay, rant over, sorry it’s late and what am I doing talking on and on about this?
